18 PŘEDNÁŠKA PAUL MEURS: Reuse, Redevelop and Design. How the Dutch deal with Heritage

Přednáška projednává nizozemský přístup k obnově památek, který respektuje jejich kvalitu, avšak nevnímá je staticky. Adresuje současné požadavky a podporuje ekonomickou, technickou a společenskou obnovu objektu formou nalezení a podpory vhodného nového využití. Přístup bude diskutován v mnoha stupních: forma spolupráce, nalezení funkcí, finanční řešení, design, atd. Adaptivní užívání památek je přítomné v pracích mnoha nizozemských ateliérů (OMA, MVRDV, West 8, Mecanoo…), jejichž analýza bude součástí přednášky.

Prof. dr. Paul Meurs je architekt a spolu s dr. Marinke Steenhuis zakladatel výzkumné a konzultační platformy SteenhuisMeurs, kterou tvoří architekti a historici. Specializují se na adaptivní obnovu památek, urbánní proměny a teorii. Ústředním tématem je místo minulosti v kontextu budoucnosti.
Profesor Paul Meurs je také autorem mnoha odborných článků a publikací o památkové ochraně a vývoji památkové péče. V letech 2006-2016 vedl ústav Heritage and Cultural Value na Delft University of Technology.

18 LECTURE PAUL MEURS: Reuse, Redevelop and Design. How the Dutch deal with Heritage

Where there is vacancy, there is space for new uses. This often results in surprising combinations, such as a shop in a church, a recreation area in a military zone or a school in a factory-complex. The lecture presents the approach of the Dutch to reuse and intervention in heritage. Monuments are respected in their qualities, but not considered to be static. In order to remain relevant for today’s society, appropriate use is considered to be fundamental.
The adaptive reuse of monuments and historic places is an important pillar of the Dutch creative industry. The creativity manifests itself in a variety of ways: in the art of bringing people together, in coming up with surprising combinations of functions, in the financial solutions to realize seemingly unaffordable ideas, in the intelligent conservation of outdated buildings, and of course in the design to provide the heritage with a new appearance and appeal. The challenge is to assign vacant buildings to other uses or to adjust them in such a way that they meet current requirements and become useful again: technically, economically and socially.

Prof. dr. Paul Meurs is an architect and director of SteenhuisMeurs, together with dr. Marinke Steenhuis. SteenhuisMeurs is specialized in research and consultancy for heritage development, adaptive reuse and urban transformations. The team consists of 10 people, architects and architectural historians. The key issue in this workfield is the place of the past in the urban landscape of the future. Paul published many articles and books on heritage conservation, adaptive re-use, conservation through planning and heritage development. From 2006 until 2016 he was professor, at the chair of Heritage and Cultural Value at Delft University of Technology.
