Petra Steinerová:  Barter Trade

Petra Steinerová
Fotograf Gallery

curator: Edith Jeřábková Petra Steinerová (*1980, in 2005 she graduated from the Photography Dept. at FAMU) chose her cyclical method of work at the beginning of her career. In her previous photographic series (I will mention just two), she came to terms with family events – with her father’s admission of his true sexual orientation – or in a documentary series she mapped recreational buildings, their temporariness, inventiveness, do-it-yourself work, and even their social aspect tied to the socialist atmosphere of societal flight to privacy or other sealed off (detached) society. The exhibition, Výměnný obchod (Barter Trade), is – like the other aforementioned projects – the result of a long-term objective and work, as well as – and here specifically – photography connected to travel. The artist, who in other areas is sensitive (in her treatment of) social topics and of the socialist past, was enthused by the absurdity of a half-forgotten phenomenon of the socialist system: international co-operation and friendship. This is an idea based on mirror image and reflection (here we could, should we really wish to, find a parallel with principles of photographic technique). Each country, region, town, business, school, and even pupil, had their mirror image in their twin equivalent.
