JULIAN DAY – STATIC
New work by Australian artist and composer Julian Day. Day typically repurposes objects from the music world into playful and often poignant sculptures and installations that speak to connection and conflict within community structures.
JULIAN DAY
Julian Day is an artist and composer from Australia. He fuses his twin backgrounds in composition and visual art, working across installation, video, performance and recording. He typically uses homogeneous sound to capture human and atmospheric turbulence within such environments as galleries, parklands and homes. He also employs what Caleb Kelly calls ‘cracked media’ – dynamically reconfiguring audio playback devices such as CD players and turntables to rethink our relationship to the recorded canon. Day has presented work at Whitechapel Gallery, Café Oto, MASS MoCA, Le Poisson Rouge, Museum of Contemporary Art and Sydney Opera House. He has won the ARTAND Australia Contemporary Art Award and fellowships from the British Council and Australia Council. His music has been performed by Third Angle, Transit, Lisa Moore, Decibel, Synergy Percussion, Zubin Kanga, Ensemble Offspring and Australian String Quartet and featured in such festivals as MATA, Spitalfields Music, Liquid Architecture, Metropolis and VIVID. Day directs two ongoing projects. Super Critical Mass brings together temporary communities to undertake simple tasks using identical sound within public places, interacting using game rules and social structures. An Infinity Room (AIR) overlays temporary rooms within rooms using densely intersecting long tones to enact a ‘turbulent geometry’. Day has also presented and produced many programs on BBC and ABC radio, interviewing Steve Reich, Terry Riley, Janet Cardiff and Laurie Anderson among many others. In 2015 his work will feature at the Bang On A Can Marathon in New York, the Royal Academy of Music’s Piano Festival in London, at the Prague Quadrennial of Performance, Design and Space and the Asia Pacific Triennial at the Gallery of Modern Art, Brisbane.
