Memories of a Dream presents the latest work by Jakub Tytykalo (*1984), an artist whose visual language straddles the boundaries of drawing, painting, and sculptural form. The very first word of the exhibition’s title points to memory—that is, to something that is in itself vague, changeable, and subjective. And such are his works as well. This series of recent acrylic paintings and smudged drawings does not refer to actual dream experiences, but to an imagination that functions similarly to them—freely, associatively, without the need for logical order. Tytykalo, therefore, does not attempt to reconstruct specific dreams; rather, he tries to capture their atmosphere and perhaps even the vague sensation that lingers for a moment after waking, even as the content begins to fade.

His visual expression is based on a delicately crafted composition in which figurative motifs meet abstract shapes and indeterminate spaces. The figures of dreamers or dream guides emerge from the darkness, or conversely, disappear into it. Earthy colors—ochres, oranges, brick tones, and turquoise accents—create an environment where traces of imaginary dreams and eroded remnants of reality intertwine. Experiments with ceramics further introduce tangible materiality and tactile qualities into Tytykala’s work. His compositions capture fragments of stories that are, by their very nature, not literal, thus compelling the viewer to interpret them for themselves. Memories of a Dream is not a return to what has happened, but to what is born in the mind when it is allowed to wander freely through the landscape of the subconscious.
