The Statutory City of Brno announces the launch of an open, single-phase artistic and architectural design competition for the design of a work of art dedicated to Lucie Bakešová on Žlutý kopec in Brno.

Lucie Bakešová (1853–1935) first entered public life as an archaeologist, then continued as an ethnographer and organizer of national collections of folk culture, and later as a social and educational worker in Brno, where she co-founded the Moravian Women’s Shelter in Brno, which gradually grew into a major social welfare organization in the Brno region. In addition, she was a member of many socio-political organizations, charitable groups, and women’s associations. She was actively involved in all of these endeavors and contributed articles to the press of the time. She worked selflessly at the Women’s Shelter, the Shelter for Orphaned Children, the Association of Progressive Women, the Women’s Division of the Czechoslovak Red Cross (in collaboration with Alice Masaryková), in the Union of Slavic Women, the Union of Women and Girls, the Geneva League for Peace and Freedom, Živě (as chairwoman), the Peace Union, and the Temperance Union.

Those who do not know their own history are condemned to repeat it. But is it always a bad thing?

Present Perfect traces the marks of art history on the contemporary art scene, be it in direct dialogue with specific earlier works, or in subtler affinities and echoes that resonate across time. The exhibition’s second unifying element is ceramic clay. A material present at the very origins of artistic practice and very much alive today, currently experiencing a renewed surge of interest not unlike that of a century ago. Older works in fired clay are brought into conversation with contemporary pieces in ceramics and beyond. It is, after all, the nature of clay to endure and to hold, within its surface, the imprints of everything that came before.

The exhibition it's giving real explores the transformation of the image at a time when our natural trust in what we see is being challenged by generative technologies, algorithms, and images capable of convincingly simulating reality. Through painting and object-based works, it presents the image as a dynamic and evolving space in which relationships between perception, personal experience, collective imagination, and reality are continuously formed.

At a moment when many established certainties are being called into question, the image becomes a means of seeking orientation and developing new ways of understanding the world. Through a range of artistic approaches and in dialogue with the work of Václav Boštík, the exhibition demonstrates how, particularly in times of uncertainty, art reconsiders reality, challenges habitual ways of seeing, and searches for new forms of meaning.

In doing so, it raises the question of how images shape our understanding of the world today and how they redefine the boundaries between experience, reality, and fiction.

The Benetheo Foundation announces the second year of the Signs and Landscapes competition, which aims to support the creation of new works of art in publicly accessible landscapes in the Czech Republic. The resulting intervention is intended to be consistent with the mission and values of the Benetheo Foundation.

The call is open to individuals and artist collectives who wish to create a contemporary work that grows out of a specific place and its unique layers. Supported proposals should work sensitively with the landscape and its broader meanings, while conveying a message that goes beyond the purely aesthetic and touches on what transcends the human condition.

Participation is contingent on the involvement of at least one experienced representative from the field of art, architecture or design. The selected proposal will receive financial support in the amount of 250,000 CZK for the realization of the work as well as royalties.
