Broum's exhibition Retina by Austrian painter Julia Koudely Hansen-Löve focuses by its very title on an analogous depiction of the main theme of her introspective work. This is the contradiction between concept and imagination, between description and holistic experience, and finally between factual experience and the phenomenon (revelation) of the image. The image, as perceived and felt by the author, escapes the deadening descriptiveness. She chooses the path of "dramatization" of an experience that constantly, as in a dream, returns. This approach allows for the intermingling of concepts, ideas, phenomena and imagination on a single pictorial surface. Certain human experiences can only be made philosophically present and thus generalized by means of dramatization, as the philosopher of French existentialism Gabriel Marcel (himself an author of plays) had already argued and as the German Romantics, led by Novalis, had known long before.
