My Body Is the Temple for Which I Stand thematizes the social pressure projected onto women’s bodies in relation to motherhood. It reflects the loss of bodily autonomy, which becomes subordinated to expected social roles. These expectations do not concern only pregnant women but shape our perception of the body long before that.
In her work, Richenza Detwiler examines her own body and traces how these pressures are reflected in her relationship to herself. Through this personal perspective, she addresses all those who have experienced similar pressures. The exhibition title, gently ironic and drawing on internet language, simultaneously calls for the liberation of the body and for collective support. The work thus validates and makes present the experience of objectification and bodily alienation as a broader social phenomenon.
