Rugby is a game for everyone these days. It captures the spirit of the times. Artists aren’t usually big sports fans, but rugby isn’t just a sport. It’s a challenge for our times. You have to be physically fit, you have to know the rules of the game, and you have to use your intelligence.

I don’t know if the exhibiting artists have studio windows overlooking the green turf of rugby fields, but one thing is certain: anyone can play rugby—whether they’re small, smaller, big, or bigger; young or older; tall or broader; girls or boys. Artists are the same. Some are smaller, others larger. Some are older, others barely of school age. Both girls and boys paint. A beautiful harmony.

Many of the exhibitors have encountered the game of rugby and know that the rules of this beautifully colorful and tough game were translated by Ondřej Sekora, the author of Ferda the Ant: “Work of All Kinds.” Mr. Sekora is considered the founder of Czechoslovak and Czech rugby, which he discovered during his stay in Paris.

Rugby is like life itself. It’s a team sport. It takes place in stadiums filled with “x” thousand fans who shout, whistle, make a racket, sing—in short, cheer on their team. “Art” might be envious.

Our artists aren’t envious; they drew inspiration from the playfulness and colorfulness of the game of rugby, and so we have the opportunity to see how their battle with brushes and paints turned out.
