The exhibition Landscapes will fill the spaces of the Rabbinical House gallery, but—at least temporarily—several paintings thematically distinct from the main theme of the art exhibition will also be on display in the synagogue. We can also look forward to several spatial installations.
Alžběta Kumstátová, a sculptor by training, cannot hide in her textured paintings the experiences that reflect her sculptural expertise; yet at the same time, she contemplates landscapes with a simplifying lightness.
The paintings, born of lived experience and time spent gazing at the landscape, are often simplified to the point of becoming a sign or symbol; at the same time, she is not afraid to use recurring motifs and their decorative function to a comforting degree. The distinctive color palette of Alžběta Kumstátová’s paintings in no way conceals the artist’s subjective and, to a certain extent, idealized view of the surrounding world.
The paintings featuring Old Testament motifs exhibited in the synagogue correspond almost entirely to the artist’s experience with three-dimensional sculpture.
