What is sleep? On the one hand, it represents a form of intimacy that is not exclusively partnered and thus expands our notion of intimacy. It offers us the possibility of decentring romantic relationships and finding belonging beyond them. But rest also has a systemic dimension, as the American poet, performer and activist Tricia Hersey has discussed. In our society, rest is seen as a waste of time that could otherwise be used more productively; as if our self-worth is based solely on the amount of work we do. But what would such a claim say about people with disabilities, who often need significantly more rest? Would we really label them as inferior or lazy? Hersey radically rejects such pressure. And he takes his rest back. As does the dory fisher exhibition, which literally gives space for reflection on rest as much as it provides a real opportunity to stop and rest, at least for a while. It is no small feat: for lived experience - as well as radical imagination - is key to building a better and more inclusive world.
dora fišer (*2002) studied Applied Painting at SUPŠ (Secondary School of Arts and Crafts) and is now completing her BA at FHS (Faculty of Humanities, Charles University). In her work and in her life, she combines art with academic education, activism and feminism. Currently, her primary artistic medium is oil painting, but drawing, which she has been doing for many years, is also strongly imprinted in her paintings. She creates mainly figurative works characterized by green tones. Her non-violent works speak primarily through their atmosphere, calmness and timelessness; paintings that test the limits of intimacy, revealing sensitivity and vulnerability. They communicate heavy themes of inequality and social and systemic oppression.
