Designer Jiří Pelcl will present a new collection of vases at the exhibition, titled Natural/Brutal, which he created at the Valner glassworks.
The path to this collection, however, was not straightforward. At first, he hesitated and wanted to turn down the exhibition. Ultimately, however, the curators convinced him, partly based on his memories of Olomouc from his youth.
The exhibition, aptly titled Vases (I Didn’t Want Another Exhibition), he presents not only Brutalist-looking glass vases set in raw metal forms, but also a selection of older glass and porcelain pieces. Everyday objects are represented here in two contexts—product design and an exploration of his art.
Jiří Pelcl (*1950) is a prominent figure in the field of design in the Czech Republic and abroad. In addition to his practical design work for industrial production, he is involved in design theory and publishes on the subject. He has designed the interiors of numerous prestigious buildings (including the interiors for President Václav Havel at Prague Castle, the embassy in Rome, Pretoria, Gustav Mahler’s birthplace in Kaliště, the Czech House in Malmö, and others). His works are represented in many design collections at major museums both at home and abroad, including the National Gallery in Prague and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
