A love story without love, a mystery in a world emptied of mystery, an epic tragicomedy of the mundane. This visually spellbinding, non-verbal fresco blends surreal imagery with the bleak ordinariness of the Finnish countryside, gradually evolving into a psychological drama of Kafkaesque proportions. Giant’s Kettle is a series of moving photographic images that explore the creative space between photography and cinema. Through its captivating visuals, distinctive ambiguity, and internal logic of the absurd, the work nods to the celebrated tradition of Finnish filmmaking while remaining a highly distinctive and, within the Czech context, unique audiovisual piece. Originally conceived as a feature-length art film, the project made its international premiere at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, earning numerous accolades, and is now touring as a standalone exhibition.

The subconscious imagery was created by Markku Hakala and Mari Käki through a deeply intuitive and intimate process of the unconscious. While open to interpretation, the work is frequently perceived as a commentary on the complexity of human relationships or the lack of spontaneity and meaning in the contemporary world. The title refers to a pothole in the bedrock, carved out by thousands of years of relentless pressure. What is the cultural pit we have created, how does it confine us from within, and how do we escape it?

Markku Hakala and Mari Käki are a Finnish artistic duo whose long-term practice focuses on blurring the boundaries between photography and the medium of the moving image. They have showcased their evocative projects in prestigious galleries and screened them at major film festivals across Europe.
