The installation Qubus: Appendix, located in the foyer of the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague, presents a selection of luminaires, an object and a video, presenting a representative probe into the lesser-known position of the work of the Qubus studio and its founder, sculptor and designer Jakub Berdych Karpelis. It also functions as a complement to the retrospective exhibition Qubus: The Beautiful Beast / Fighting Beauty.
The objects on display represent a diverse mix of media and approaches, from a prototype luminaire to an object-based paraphrase of Gerrit Thomas Rietveld's iconic chair to a hanging lamp from a collectible series of lamps made from raw trimmings and a readymade that opens up the dilemma between function and expression. The installation accentuates themes that have long been central to Qubus' work: experimenting with material, working with ambivalence of meaning, and pushing the boundaries between design and free art.
The three-channel video The Obsession Smugglers extends the installation and Qubus' portfolio to a performative level, while reflecting a pure obsession with making as one of the fundamental drivers of their artistic approach.
