Are is a curatorial organization operating since 2013 in Prague. It is currently run by Zuzana Blochová and Edith Jeřábková. Are was founded out of a need for greater flexibility and diversity in the field of contemporary art and related fields. It builds a collective approach over individual projects, develops international teamwork and collaborates with academic, educational, cultural and artistic institutions as well as independent initiatives.
Are currently working on a series of projects that interpret the diverse and interconnected work of Ester Krumbachová, costume designer, set designer, playwright, lyricist and director. Through a variety of exhibition formats, curated screenings, publications and an open archive, Are opens up the work of this key figure of the Czechoslovak New Wave to the present.
Are provides a backdrop to the Institute of Anxiety initiative, which was founded in 2018 by Are members and artists Barbora Kleinhamplová and Eva Koťátková. The Anxiety Institute creates a space for research on anxiety that cuts across society and manifests itself in insomnia, stress, alienation, loss of empathy, inequality and violence. The Institute aims to communicate anxiety and turn it into a force capable of radicalising and forcing structural changes in the existing order of things.
LES – a community for cultivation, theory and art is part of the Anxiety Institute's programme. To explore issues related to environmental grief, accelerating processes of agricultural and forest landscape and land degradation, advancing drought, and the extinction of small animals and insects, Are purchased a forest and meadow site in the Eagle Mountains for community use in 2019. The intention is to create a sustainable biodiverse forest friendly to the most diverse life forms from microorganisms, bacteria, plants, fungi, animals to humans.
