RE:CENT (Full title: RE:CENT Center for the Study and Popularization of Medieval Visual Culture) was established in 2012 at the Seminar of Art History at Masaryk University in Brno as the Center for Early Medieval Studies to breathe life into the study of pre-modern history, bring creativity to it, and foster true collaboration across disciplines. It has fulfilled this goal and has gradually transformed into a vibrant space for mediating dialogue between scholars, students and the public.

As RE:CENT continues to seek new ways to study the cultures of the pre-modern world, their modern reception and later reinterpretation, we also want to emphasize that our center has also become a place for creativity and artistic production. RE:CENT has become a platform where graphic designers, illustrators, filmmakers, science popularizers, journalists and media specialists meet. This team produces magazines, books, films, podcasts, artwork and content for social media.

RE:CENT organizes conferences, workshops, field trips and a public lecture series (Mid-C JinaX) to break down the boundaries between academia and the public. We strive to create works that inspire not only through quality content but also through unique design.

In dialogue with the public, we at RE:CENT aim to share powerful stories and offer new perspectives on contemporary social and cultural issues through images, art and history. We believe that a critical understanding of the past in today's political and social context can help us better understand the causes of marginalization - whether of individuals or entire communities. We see the past as an area in which to seek answers to the pressing issues of the present. We want to show how powerful, beautiful and emotionally charged the legacy of pre-modern visual cultures can be for today's world.

Since 2014, RE:CENT has published the internationally peer-reviewed journal Convivium: Exchanges and Interactions in Premodern Cultures, an open forum for cutting-edge art historical research from around the world. The journal is published in both print and digital formats and is one of the most aesthetically distinctive journals in the field of art history thanks to its close collaboration with artists and graphic designers. Since 2024, we have also been publishing the Czech journal re:vision, which offers essays, interviews and shorter reflections for the general public. It is dedicated to the interconnection of science, history and current social issues.

Convivium, re:vize and the book editions prepared by the RE:CENT team create a space designed to share knowledge and passion for (not only) medieval art with people around the world.
