Živá paměť, o.p.s., in cooperation with the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, announces an art competition for the design of a commemorative plaque to be installed on the building at Bartolomějská 10 in Prague 1. This new memorial site will commemorate the Roma and Sinti persecuted during World War II and the historical role this building played in organizing their transports to concentration and extermination camps.

The competition is open to students and graduates of art schools as well as other visual artists up to 35 years of age. Its goal is to find a contemporary and dignified artistic solution that will reflect the Holocaust of the Roma and Sinti, the historical significance of the site, and at the same time respect the character of the heritage-protected environment.

The memorial plaque will be installed on the building at Bartolomějská 310/10, Prague 1. Its text will commemorate the fact that during World War II, the headquarters of the criminal police responsible for organizing the deportations of Roma and Sinti to concentration and extermination camps was located here. The text will also include a commemorative message: “We do not forget the victims of the Roma and Sinti Holocaust…”

Submitted designs will be evaluated by a six-member expert committee composed of representatives from academic institutions, Romani organizations, the visual arts community, and descendants of survivors. The three best proposals will receive financial awards.

During the competition, participants will be offered the opportunity to consult with representatives of the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague regarding the technical and artistic specifications, and with Živá paměť regarding content-related questions. If there is interest, a lecture by a historian will also be organized, focusing on the persecution of Roma and Sinti during World War II and the historical context of the future memorial plaque.

Competition entries may be submitted until November 21, 2026.

The complete terms and conditions of the competition, technical specifications, and information for contestants are published here: Announcement of the Art Competition and Detailed Terms and Conditions

The project “Memorial Plaque to the Victims of the Roma Holocaust – Bartolomějská 10” was supported by the Prague 1 City District in 2026.
