We invite you to a lecture by German writer and historian Ben Miller titled “All That Remains Is the Rest of My Life” about Jürgen Baldig and the dangers of a one-sided perspective on art dedicated to the topic of HIV/AIDS. The lecture follows the screening of the film Rettet das Feuer (Save the Fire), which will take place at 5:30 PM. The events will take place at the Goethe-Institut in Prague as part of the In the Name of Art 2026 biennial.

"The queer community longs for history. Young queer people are desperately searching for the stories of their (I think I’m past the age where I can say ‘our’) ancestors. Given the global crises unfolding around us, it’s not surprising that many of them are particularly interested in the story of the HIV and AIDS epidemic. There are countless overly simplistic interpretations. One of the key truths about activism and artistic creation related to the HIV/AIDS crisis is its multifaceted nature. This essay examines Jürgen Baldiga’s photography as a queer response to this catastrophe. Baldiga’s photographs are queer not in the sense that they concern a self that is at odds with everything around it and that must invent, create, and seek a place where it can speak, flourish, and live (although that is part of it), but in the sense that they openly celebrate sexual and gender difference, for which we have been persecuted, imprisoned, and murdered—both in the past and in the present.”

A selection of photographs by Jürgen Baldiga (1959–1993) is on view at the biennial at the Trade Fair Palace through September 13, 2026. In close dialogue with the exhibited works, we are also presenting the series “The Warmth That Only Fire Can Give—A Series of Portraits” by Aron Neubert, his friend who photographed him during the final period of his life.
