A design competition has been announced for the artistic design of the Písnice station on the planned Line D of the Prague Metro. The competition is being organized by METROPROJEKT Praha a.s., which is the designer of the station’s architectural design and is also coordinating its artistic design as part of the project preparation. The project investor is Dopravní podnik hl. m. Prahy, a.s.. The competition is organized by CBArchitektura s.r.o.

The subject of the competition is the design of the station’s visual concept, which will become an integral part of its architectural concept and contribute to creating a unique identity for the new metro station. The competition follows on from previous design competitions held for other stations on Line D and is part of a long-term concept for the artistic design of the entire new line.

The Písnice Station will likely serve as the temporary southern terminus of the first phase of Line D and as a major transfer hub for both urban and suburban transit. It will be built in the area along Libušská Street, adjacent to the SAPA complex and planned development zones that will transform into a new urban center in the coming years. The design will thus become part of one of the most significant infrastructure projects currently underway in Prague and will help shape the new urban center in the southern part of the city.

The competition is announced as a restricted, single-phase design competition in accordance with the competition rules of the Czech Chamber of Architects. In the first phase, interested parties will submit an application for participation along with a portfolio of reference works. An expert jury will then select a maximum of six participants, who will be invited to prepare a competition proposal. The second phase will include an introductory workshop and in-person presentations of the proposals to the jury. The author of the winning proposal will then, in collaboration with the station’s designer, refine the design to the level of construction drawings, which will serve as the basis for its implementation.

The jury chair is architect David Vávra. The independent members of the jury are visual artists Milena Dopitová and Tomáš Vaněk, Michal Novotný, director of the Collection of Modern and Contemporary Art at the National Gallery in Prague, and Marie Foltýnová, curator of the Prague City Gallery. The dependent members of the jury include representatives of the Prague Public Transport Company, the company METROPROJEKT Prague, and First Deputy Mayor of Prague Jaromír Beránek.

The deadline for submitting applications and portfolios is August 24, 2026, at 12:00 p.m.. Selected participants will receive an invitation to prepare a competition proposal in September; the proposals themselves will be evaluated in November, and the competition results will be announced in December 2026.
