A new series of paintings by Ester Knapová (*1993) draws on personal memory but transcends the realm of autobiographical documentation. It is based on childhood memories, and the photographic models also come partly from the family archive. However, the artist does not treat them as documents, but rather as fluid vessels of experience, whose meaning, in the process of painting, moves away from the original situation and opens up to a more general interpretation. The narrative, shaped by circumstances, is thus spread between a specific experience and what memory gradually creates on its own.
