Map

František Novotný combines painting and drawing, and develops his long-standing reflections on space, symbols, and inner landscapes through the principle of mapping. He creates layered compositions in which the line is the fundamental building block. Individual lines, nodes, and interventions intertwine, overlap, and gradually form larger wholes reminiscent of maps, landscapes, or certain territories.

His paintings can be perceived as records of processes that are not visible at first glance—relationships, forces, and movements that shape our inner and outer worlds. Each line is also a trace of a certain possibility, a moment when a specific direction crystallizes from a multitude of potential paths. The resulting map, however, remains open and fluid. It is more of a living structure than a fixed image of reality—an imprint of the world that emerges through continuous interconnection, layering, and constant transformation.
