Let us once again discover the painter Jan Autengruber (1887–1920). He studied at the Academy of Applied Art and Design in Prague and the celebrated Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. On the eve of war, he left for the south of Italy, where he broke with the academic, naturalistic style of the Munich School and began painting and sketching, as he says, “...simply in colour, with no trivial tones, definitely rich yet finely mixed colours, robust modelling, succinctness of form, plasticity, expression!!!” It is in this style that his most significant works, Crucifixion and The Elevation of the Cross, arose. He died at the age of 33 and his work was falling into deeper and deeper oblivion. Watch the exhibition here.
