Josef Bolf's paintings are artistically expressive, but their content is rather ambiguous, leaving much room for the viewer's personal interpretation. In his work we can sense the experience of working for film studios, hours spent with computer games, and perhaps even the experience of reshaping consciousness. The fairy tale characters and animals he "populates" his canvases with are endearing, but somehow strangely overdetermined, a kind of anthropomorphized fauna. These characters, however, are not living fairy tales, they are having very different experiences, albeit in a specific comic book way. The scenes depicted are dramatic, sometimes of a mythological dimension, yet at the same time strangely melancholic and resigned. We cannot read the story, however; we only ever see one film box or one comic book window.

The show is named after the fictional book of the same name by Roberta Ann Sparrow. We can also enjoy a journey through time when viewing the exhibition, where we can move from the current work to works created more than twenty years earlier.

Josef Bolf (*1971) studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in the studios of Jiří Načeradský, Vladimír Kokolii and Vladimír Skrepl. He has been established on our art scene for a long time. His work is currently attracting more and more interest, and despite considerable pressure, the artist manages to maintain a high quality in his work. He lives and works in Prague.
