Another guided tour of the exhibition will take place at the secularized Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary Kraj bez kraje.

Curator Adéla Machová will guide you through the exhibition, presenting the work of students, alumni, and studio heads from Object – Space – Action and Natural Materials at the Faculty of Art and Design, UJEP in Ústí nad Labem. She will discuss individual works as well as the themes of landscape, home, identity, the memory of place, and the human relationship to the environment that the exhibition explores.

People’s attitudes toward the landscape have changed over time—just as the landscape itself has changed. Today, the concepts of “region” and “landscape” are linked to themes of home and identity, the memory of place, ecological stability, and the availability of resources, as well as to questions of aesthetic perception and sensitivity to the environment that surrounds us. The group exhibition Kraj bez kraje explores many of these themes through artistic creation and calls for a new kind of attention: the perception of the subtle layers of our surroundings and of ourselves.

The primary criterion for selecting works for the Church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary in Litoměřice was their ability to respond sensitively to the church’s architecture and symbolic context. Here, the Baroque space becomes a metaphorical landscape full of layers, dynamic forms, and rich ornamentation. It welcomes sculptural objects, installations, audiovisual works, photographs, drawings, and paintings, which enter into a silent dialogue with it.

From Baroque monumentalism through Romantic introspection to today’s environmental and sociocultural reflections, the works explore how people seek their place where contours dissolve and boundaries blur. This raises the question of how an individual’s relationship to a place is formed in a boundless, ever-changing environment. Poetic boundlessness brings with it openness and the possibility of choice, and with them a measure of responsibility for one’s actions. At the same time, the contours of the individual also change—temporary boundaries are set aside through new experiences and stored as subtle traces of one’s identity.

The exhibition presents selected works by students, graduates, and studio heads from the “Object – Space – Action” and “Natural Materials” studios at the Faculty of Art and Design, Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem. Both studios are united by their work with space, materials, and experimentation across media. Their works feature personal stories, explorations of cultural and social connections, and sensitive probings into the places they inhabit.

However, harmonizing with a place is not a matter of a single visit. It is a process of gradual approach, in which one thoughtfully explores the edges, examines structures, investigates hidden nooks and crannies, and uncovers fragile layers—the beginnings and ends of horizons. Only through this gradual and patient process does a relationship with the environment emerge—one based on respect, attention, and sensitivity to the place that surrounds and transforms us.
