Libor Novotný is a multimedia artist, educator, and curator. He graduated from the Secondary School of Glassmaking in Železný Brod and the Institute for Art Studies, and earned his Ph.D. in visual studies from UJEP in Ústí nad Labem. Since 2008, he has served as an assistant professor in the Drawing Studio at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ostrava.

In his work, he connects natural processes with attributes of contemporary civilization. He creates hybrid organic and inorganic structures in which strength, ephemerality, and playfulness blend with empathetic insight. His bricolage approach allows him to explore themes of assimilation, growth, and adaptation in both biological and cultural contexts, often with an ironic use of political or religious symbols.

"One of the key themes in my work in recent years has been the interior space of a sculpture—the relationship between the outer surface and the inner volume. This installation is driven by a similar motivation and seeks to engage with architectural space. Not, however, in relation to the external form of architecture, but rather in the search for ways to structure the interior space. This space is shaped by function, and in order for it to be truly functional, it must offer a place where one can dwell. “Functionality” of the sculpture is in no way compromised by the absence of an interior space, which is determined by technology and material. Architectural space has at its center a void intended for habitation. Physically, it contains nothing, but it is a potential arena for the relationships offered by the geometries of the surrounding architectural shell. Corners can become the basis for diagonals; jambs and doors are fragments of the intersection of geometric forms that real architecture does not contain within itself, and so on. I am interested in a specific model of these potentials on an architectural scale."
