Chris Hill will consider notions of cultural time-base in curatorial practice and will briefly examine projects of media artists Woody and Steina Vasulka, Brian Springer, Natalie Bookchin and Jacob Rimler – as they involve the performance or reimagining of personal, fragmentary and distributed archives. The Vasulkas' "dialogue with tools" in the service of proposing a new aesthetic language in the 1970s is discussed along with work that draws from efforts to decode undated earth art and unstable contemporary digital detritus.
Chriss Hill is a media curator, artist and educator, and is currently teaching and serving as Associate Dean in the Film/Video School at California Institute for the Arts. She taught at FaVU (Brno) in the mid-1990s, and published interviews with individuals who had been involved with the Czech parallel culture before 1989 (Walking Trips in Czech Lands, 1996). She curated an extensive video art and alternative media collection Surveying the First Decade (1996) that has been distributed to museums and universities internationally by the Video Data Bank. Her recent publications and media work have investigated documentary media on the U.S. incarceration crisis, contemporary artists’ work that re-embodies experimental film and grassroots video projects of the early 1970s, tactical media initiatives in response to an educational community emergency, and beekeeping.

OE18 is a series of guest lectures by theorists and artists addressing the themes of contemporary arts and new technologies. The lectures are open to students of FAMU and other art academies, universities and the general public. The series is organized by FAMU Center for audiovisual studies.
