Now in its 9th year, the Pragovka Summer Cinema returns, this time with the overarching theme of Mutual Benefits. This year, we’ll be screening films in the MaxSpace hall behind the Permanent Beer Fest every Tuesday after dark.

Homeless Blues

Ten years ago, an exceptional social project called Homeless Blues was launched on the northeastern outskirts of Prague. The Prague 9 district decided not to drive away homeless people, but to offer them a chance: temporary housing units, work, and the opportunity to regain their dignity. Over the course of a year, the documentary follows several members of this community: Margita, who finds solace in animals after her partner’s death; Karel and Martin, a couple living under the railroad tracks who decide to get married; Karel “Truhlář,” a talented craftsman unable to leave the settlement; and Hanka and Naďa, two women building a new home under an overpass. Their lives are connected by field worker Karel Valenta, the moral pillar of the entire community. The film is a quiet portrait of hope, fragile stability, and human dignity on the margins of society. (Czech Film Center)
