What should a resilient, vibrant, and well-functioning 21st-century urban park look like?

Komenský Park is Ostrava’s most significant park, a place for daily recreation, and an important part of the city’s green infrastructure. What is their current condition, and what kind of care will they need in the coming decades? How is the role of urban parks changing in the era of climate change, and what functions should a large urban park actually fulfill in the 21st century?

We’ll be asking about managing mature trees and new plantings, water management, biodiversity, microclimate, the park’s recreational and social functions, and how to strike a balance between heavily used areas and quieter natural sections.

We will invite experts—including dendrologists, landscape architects, and other urban green space specialists from other cities—to join the discussion. They will offer an independent perspective on Komenský Park and share their experiences with the care of significant urban parks elsewhere.

How is their long-term restoration being planned today? What should a high-quality maintenance plan include, and how should we plan the transformation of a park whose trees and other vegetation evolve over the course of decades?

Moderated by architect Tomáš Čech.
