The term post-truth has become one of the key expressions of our time. It denotes a situation in which emotions, impressions and repeated assertions are given precedence over verifiable facts in forming a picture of reality. Truth here ceases to be the result of critical examination and becomes more a question of reach, visibility and the ability to influence the audience. That which is loud enough and shared enough begins to function as truth itself.
The Post-truth exhibition is based on this experience of a world overwhelmed by information, half-truths and manipulative images. The internet and digital media create an environment in which the lines between reality, construction and fiction are constantly blurred. It is no longer so much about what is real, but what we are willing to believe - or what we are willing to accept as reality.
Both authors have long been concerned with this phenomenon in their work, albeit from different perspectives. The common denominator is an interest in the mechanisms of manipulation, control and distortion of reality, as well as the role of the spectator who moves in this environment. The exhibition brings together new works created specifically for this occasion with selected older works that foreshadow and develop the theme of post-truth.
Post-truth is understood here not only as a political or media concept, but as a broader cultural and existential condition. A state in which orientation in the world becomes increasingly uncertain and where the question needs to be asked again and again: what do we actually consider to be true - and why.
Tomáš Roubal (*1982) is a painter, graphic artist and sculptor. In the last decade his work has focused heavily on the medium of sculpture, building on his earlier work as a painter and draughtsman. Roubal develops a distinctive visual language through which he explores the position of contemporary man in society. His works have a strong critical dimension and reflect the phenomena of alienation, technological control and the capitalization of personal and public relations, often through the anonymous figure as a generalized subject.
Adam Štech (*1980) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague in the studios of Jiří Sopek and Vladimír Skrepl. His work combines various artistic styles and historical periods, especially Cubism and Expressionism, which he updates in a contemporary context. His figurative motifs often undergo a process of deconstruction and reassembly, which results in a shift in their meaning. In addition to painting, he also works with sculpture and plaster mosaics.
