Showing his recent output on the second floor of the Old Town Hall is a distinct representative of the contemporary Czech art scene, Jiří Matějů. He employs an idiom anchored in geometric abstraction, creating paintings characterized by regular horizontal and vertical structures drawing on the optical qualities of colours. Notwithstanding his obvious accentuation of a rigid abstract order of things, the artist lays equal emphasis on the association of his painting with thoroughly real sources of inspiration and specific visual perceptions, thoughts, feelings, and existential experiences.
