The egg is difficult to carry. It requires a special kind of firm tenderness. And yet we carry eggs over distances of our own choosing and those imposed upon us, under conditions that are both safe and dangerous. The exhibition by Taiwanese artist and current MeetFactory resident Chen Chen Yu, draws inspiration from a specific historical event: in 1945, when hundreds of thousands of German-speaking families were expelled from the Czech borderlands, they were given limited time to pack and strict restrictions on what they could take with them. How were eggs carried in such conditions?

In these border areas, there was a scattered glass craft in which a single glass bead might pass through many different households before it was finished - a form of knowledge that lived on in the hands and passed skills through bodies over the hills. The expulsion broke this chain. The exhibition Dream of the Eggs approaches this amputation from the side, through the fragile logic of the egg.

The egg dreams of growing limbs, of no longer needing to be carried, of moving on its own. It is a body yet to come, with limbs yet to arrive. The exiled glassmakers also dreamed of limbs: the blowpipe, the furnace, the bodily apparatus of the craft. The dream and the phantom limb point in two different temporal directions - one to a body yet to come, the other to a body already gone. Dream of the Eggs also considers how the body holds itself together, through the limbs it acknowledges and those it denies.
