Gallery of Modern Art in Hradec Králové / Hradec Králové
Co je doma, to se počítá
The exhibition explores the phenomenon of the creation of partners in the visual arts - the relationship of married or life pairs whose personal and creative trajectories took place against the backdrop of the historical upheavals of the 20th century.
The chronological order traces the development of individual relationships and the changing position of partners in the field of cultural production under different social and political conditions. External circumstances entered into the creation of artworks, but also personal, small, everyday stories standing in counterpoint to the big history.
The exhibition of selected artists shows that creativity often emerges in a dialogue between two people - out of inspiration, support, but sometimes also out of rivalry. The visitor has the opportunity to see how relationships were reflected in the choice of subject matter, techniques, style and the way artists reflected the reality of the times. From Art Nouveau and Modernism to Socialist Realism to Conceptual Art, we find different layers of mutual "interaction" in each stage of the exhibition.
In addition to iconic and well-known partnerships, the exhibition also presents lesser-known, often overlooked artist tandems. In doing so, it opens up the question of visibility and recognition: to what extent has the work of one partner been overshadowed in the past by the more prominent or famous personality of the other? Can a contemporary perspective contribute to a reassessment of these relationships and a new reading of their works? Is sufficient attention being paid to neglected creative voices whose work is of equal quality and distinctiveness?
The visual dialogues between the selected partners invite deeper reflection on the crucial role that human proximity plays in the art world and the extent to which this partnership is influenced by historical circumstances and social conventions. While the past cannot be changed, it is possible to change our perception of a complex system of mutual respect and support that can be both a source of creative energy and a limiting factor whose shadow is difficult to cross.
