What goes on inside an individual, and what is happening in society? Where do personal anxieties intersect with collective fears, and how do internal conflicts manifest themselves in the world around us?

The exhibition Twins at the GAFA Gallery in Pilsen’s DEPO2015 brings together the work of David Fuxa and Simona Blahutová, two artists united by an interest in the human psyche, behavior, and extreme situations.

Their artistic and personal paths crossed at the Secondary School of Fine Arts in Prague, where they met as teacher and student. Their shared interest in psychology and experiences with anxiety gradually evolved into a collegial and friendly relationship. Both artists’ work also reflects an awareness of their own perfectionism and a search for ways to cope with inner tension. However, each approaches it differently.

David Fuxa (a graduate of the Painting Studio at the Sutnar Academy of Fine Arts in Pilsen) focuses primarily on the individual and his or her psychological experience. Through painting and film, he explores the human psyche, extreme situations on the border between life and death, and the theme of suicide. At the same time, he addresses the current state of Czech psychiatric care. His works often employ hyperrealistic detail and psychological portraiture. Painting and film, however, are not merely alternatives for conveying the same message—they distribute specific information between themselves and create a dialogue that encourages the viewer to engage in active interpretation.

Simona Blahutová shifts her focus from the individual to broader social contexts. In her works, she revisits events in modern history in which people found themselves in extreme situations and faced crucial decisions or internal conflicts. In recent years, she has focused on the dark side of Western society and critical moments in American history, including the September 11 terrorist attacks and the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Her work captures the spirit of the times and raises questions about collective memory, fear, and responsibility.

While Fuxa explores the inner world of the individual, Blahutová examines broader social events. Their approaches thus converge in a dialogue between two distinct scales—the personal and the global. They are also united by the fact that they offer neither unambiguous answers nor ready-made interpretations. Meanings remain open, allowing viewers to relate the presented situations to their own experiences as well as to the uncertainties of the contemporary world.

Twins thus addresses topics that are exceptionally urgent today: social tensions and fears of armed conflict, as well as the growing need for psychological and psychiatric care, the capacity of which is insufficient to meet demand. The exhibition does not merely connect the personal and the social thematically—it shows how these levels influence one another and how difficult it can be to separate a person’s inner experience from the world in which they live.
