1939–2021: Konec černobílé doby
26. 05. 2023 - 30. 06. 2030
Národní galerie Praha, Veletržní palác / Praha 7
This exhibition does not set out to soothe the viewer or to offer pleasing decoration. It wants to strike — to awaken curiosity, unease and the sheer joy of unrestrained visual force. The new exhibition at Galerie Weinberg presents a concentrated selection of artists, each of whom treats the artwork as a carrier of a powerful emotional charge.
The central pillar of the exhibition is a compelling dialogue between two absolutely pivotal names of the Czech art scene. On one side stands Vojtěch Kovařík, an internationally acclaimed star of contemporary painting, with his monumental forms and robust, mythical figures. On the other is Michael Rittstein, a living legend of Czech expressive grotesque, whose canvases pulse with elemental colour energy and the dense mass of applied paint. This central dialogue is joined by further artists who push the boundaries of how we perceive space and material.
The exclusive highlight of the exhibition is the monumental cast-glass sculpture by the world-renowned duo Stanislav Libenský & Jaroslava Brychtová, whose work with inner light and order forms a fascinating counterpoint to the wild painterly expression.
Visitors can also look forward to the hypnotic, organic abstraction of Jan Kaláb, which resonates with the unmistakable aesthetic of Radovan Pauch. Marek Číhal brings a fresh painterly ferocity, a generous gestural hand and dynamic work with space. Čeněk Pražák and Eva Fišerová develop expressive registers further still — Fišerová’s extensive and coherent body of work forms the robust visual foundation of the entire exhibition space.
Throughout the exhibition, the viewer is continually drawn into a world of tension and contrast. The rawness and darker figuration of Michal Janovský contrast sharply — yet harmoniously — with the playful objects of the celebrated Krištof Kintera. The overall sensory experience and the complexity of the exhibition are completed by the distinctive visions of Zdeněk Šorf and Adam Štěch, each arriving with a highly original and analytical view of the modern world.
Come and experience art that pulses with life and will not let your senses rest.
