The work of Florin Granwehr (1942–2019), a Swiss artist who, despite being based primarily in Zurich, maintained ties with the Czech art scene, is being presented in the Czech Republic for the first time. This was primarily thanks to his wife, the art theorist Ludmila Vachtová.

Granwehra’s rationally and geometrically based sculptures and drawings drew on the legacy of Zurich Concretism and evolved from the 1960s through the 2010s. The most visible part of this body of work is a series of striking, monumental geometric installations located in public spaces in Swiss cities. However, through his systematic approach and self-discipline, he gradually established a highly distinctive artistic stance, culminating in the formulation of his own creative “Theorem.”

The exhibition will present a cross-section of his unique wire and wooden models (1970) and extensive series of ink drawings Sensogram (1980), Folgen (1984, 1987), Kreiswandler (1985), Raumgrund (1986), Novinans (1991), and Angulon (1993).

This systematic, self-contained body of work, body of work, developed over decades, explores the “foundations” of the geometric conception of the world, drawing deeply on the past of European scholarship while also reaching toward a fluid present, whose state shifts just as the lines in Granwehr’s drawings do.
