Hella Hammid was born on July 15, 1921 in Frankfurt, Germany. She later became an American citizen and moved to Los Angeles. She was an active photojournalist and photographer from the 1940s through the 1970s. Hammid worked for LIFE magazine, Ebony, the New York Times, and many other U.S. and international publications. She was a published photographer of children's books, such as "A is for Aloha" and "The New Baby at Your House".In 1948 Hella (nee Heyman) married Alexander Hammid, who was a leading avant-garde photographer and filmmaker in Czechoslovakia between the two world wars. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1938 and became involved in American avant-garde cinema, producing with his first wife, Maya Deren. In fact Hella Hammid had worked on Maya Deren's first three films as a camera person, who was initially instructed by Alexander Hammid. Her photographs were included in two seminal photography exhibitions: The Family of Man and the International Exhibition of Photography - The Camera as Witness, which was held at the World's Fair Expo 67. Hella Hammid died in 1992 in Los Angeles.
