Incompatible Format Studies consists of six brief audio compositions which use frequencies most consumer “ear bud” headphones are typically incapable of reproducing. As each visitor to the gallery will plug in their own headphones, this promotes a distinctly personal sonic experience, with many (or all) of the frequencies and psychoacoustic effects remaining unheard. The work exploits the sonically limited design of most consumer headphones and highlights the edited manner in which most audio is consumed within contemporary culture.
Berlin-based artist Jamie Drouin (b.1970, Canadian) explores the subtleties of experience, and the way we perceive temporal space through installations, objects, and performance. Common threads in his work are the examination of “residual” electronic sounds, and our relationship with this palette in domestic spaces, as well as the sculptural perception of sound.
