Flow State is the viral slogan of 2025. It means a passion for a cause that engulfs you so much that you stop noticing the world around you and the passage of time. This is exactly what fashion designer Jan Černý (*1993), winner of the Czech Grand Design Award for 2024, is doing with his first solo exhibition in Brno. His name is most often associated with the Olympic collection for Paris 2024, the uniforms worn by the staff of the Czech pavilion at Expo 2025 in Osaka, the green glass dress worn by actress Anya Geislerova at the 59th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, but above all with his own brand JAN SOCIÉTÉ.
The hallmarks of Jan Černý's work are the recognisable silhouettes and bold details of his men's and genderless collections inspired by fine art - such as his signature Rorschach test print, which was inspired by an artistic interpretation of Vladimir Boudník's prints - or uniforms, workwear and street wear. All of these layers are united by a respect for tradition, high tailoring and an innovative take on menswear.
Jan Černý's approach to fashion is democratic, managing to combine street and high fashion. In addition to creating his own unique collections, presented in spectacularly conceived shows, he collaborates with Czech work shoe manufacturer Prestige. While still a fashion student in Zlín in 2015, he chose this Czech sneaker as his theme. He designed its individual edition, which was appreciated by the former artistic director of Louis Vuitton, Virgil Abloh, one of the most progressive fashion designers of the first quarter of the 21st century, under whose guidance Jan Černý completed an internship in Paris. It was also at his instigation that the Prestige Jan collection was launched last year.
Jan Černý creates under his own brand JAN SOCIÉTÉ. Its name suggests that it represents a specific concept of a community-based brand that connects culture, art and music. The community collaboration of young designers within the brand is also important to Jan Černý's creative process. The closest team is the top tailor and fashion designer Boris Kral, who prototypes each model, verifies the technology and tests the details.
Through his own brand, Jan Černý realizes his view of fashion, which he sees as an experience. Therefore, he often connects and inspires the wearers of his models to interact through his own, exceptionally dramaturgically conceived social events. By creating such unique experiences, he builds a strong, multi-faceted community that enthusiastically follows his creative vision.
Through his unpretentious and inventive reinterpretation of iconic clothing types such as the suit, shirt or coat, Jan pushes the boundaries of the men's wardrobe across generations and restores style and quality tailoring to young men's clothing. In this respect, his stature and influence in the cultural and fashion milieu are unprecedented.
"I see myself as an experience designer. Through mediums such as clothing, light, sound or set design, I compose an overall emotion that is then transferred to the viewer or visitor. In the same way, I think about the upcoming exhibition. It will be one big surprise." says Jan Černý.
