An exhibition of work by a key figure of contemporary Czech art of the period after the restoration of democracy in this country, the late Ján Mančuška (1972–2011). This retrospective will offer to the general public access to his output previously shown at international exhibitions and/or currently owned by various European and American museums, including many which will be on view for the first time in the Czech Republic. Mančuška’s work exemplifies an intersection of diverse art disciplines: literature, film, conceptual art, theatre, installation, video, and text. His installations often individualize the element of text, treating it as an object, examining alternative ways of non-linear reading, and engaging in thoroughgoing reflections on the languages of film and theatre.

The exhibition will thus make possible a confrontation between the myth surrounding his works that have been less well known in this country, and the reality of over a decade-long period of intensive creative endeavour. The retrospective is substantiated by several years of efforts devoted to detailed reconstruction of an exhaustive catalogue of art works and scenarios. It is being organized in association with the Ján Mančuška Estate, Andrew Kreps Gallery New York, Meyer Riegger Berlin and Karlsruhe, and an extensive list of institutional and private loaners.
The exhibition will be accompanied by the publication, jointly with tranzit.cz and JRP Ringier, of a volume of selected texts and original scenarios.
