The two authors take on opposite roles. Jan Poupě adopts a clearly defined approach from the outset—one one would expect more from a photographer—while photographer Jiří Thýn gives ample room to intuition—something one would expect from a painter.
In both cases, however, the result is a highly contemporary language that evokes labyrinths of industrial, spiritual, or inner landscapes; an accumulation of digital traces; a series of calculations; and a coming to terms with history. Each also tests the limits of their medium and ranks among the leading figures in contemporary art in this regard.
The work of Jan Poupě and Jiří Thýn thus offers an opportunity to reimagine what the viewer perceives beneath the painting and beneath the photograph. At the same time, the artists offer a similar refreshing sense of uncertainty regarding history—what is past, what is not yet past, and to what extent it permeates the present. And because the exhibiting artists also gravitate toward site-specific installations, the gallery space itself is put to the test through subtle interventions.
