The exhibition presents a dialogue between two distinctive artists: Polish-Romani visual artist Małgorzata Mirga-Tas and Czech artist Sráč Sam. Both work with textiles, but each in a different way. Małgorzata Mirga-Tas focuses on the Romani community – its stories, identity and everyday life. Through textile, she tells people’s stories and preserves their memories. Sráč Sam, by contrast, uses textile as a way of reflecting on the body, space and relationships. Through her installations, she shows how individual parts are connected and how important it is to have a background – a place where one can pause, rest and create.
The project connects the renowned Romani artist Małgorzata Mirga-Tas, whose work draws on collective memory, craftsmanship, and personal stories, with a Czech artist who approaches textile in a more conceptual way, understanding it as something that can both conceal and reveal meanings. The exhibition was inspired by the ideas of Silvia Federici, particularly her book Re-enchanting the World, as well as the memoirs of Elena Lacková, I Was Born Under a Lucky Star.
The placement of the works by Małgorzata Mirga-Tas and Sráč Sam within the context of Liberec forms an essential part of the exhibition. The Czech–Polish–German border region has historically been closely tied to the textile industry, which significantly shaped both the landscape and the lives of local communities. Today, however, this tradition is gradually disappearing—factories are closing and production is declining. The exhibition therefore offers a new perspective on textile: not only as a material, but also as a carrier of memory, women’s work, care, and identity. At the same time, it opens up the theme of minority experiences, which both artists approach in different ways.
