In the late 1970s, Marian Palla—influenced by his experience with Eastern philosophy and art—began creating extremely minimalist ink drawings. Among other things, they are interesting in that they foreshadow strategies to which he would later return repeatedly, whether in the form of ceramics, painting, or performance. Two fundamental entities appear on the scene here—the textual message and the elementary means of the drawing gesture: the line, or occasionally a dot.
