Martin Mrkva – To the Immortals
The works of Martin Mrkva may strike the viewer as raw or even somber, not only because of their muted color palette but also due to their existential tone and choice of subjects. His paintings explore life through an awareness of its finitude. The human bodies, faces, and flowers he depicts emerge from dark backgrounds as something ephemeral—as matter subject to time, decay, disintegration, and inevitable demise.
The oppressive atmosphere of the paintings is not an end in itself. Mrkva observes the moment when beauty begins to transform into transience and the present into a mere memory. Even the monumental bouquets bear the title Departing. Here, the flowers are not a symbol of blossoming, but of the moment just before they begin to wilt. They are beautiful precisely because their beauty cannot last.
Mrkva’s paintings seem as if they have been torn not only from life, but also from their own frames. The canvases transcend their boundaries, leaving the safe space of the painting and encroaching upon the surrounding wall. The installation evokes the impression of crumbling, flaking plaster, beneath which fragments of words appear: transience, withering, ruin, decay, shadow… It is as if even the gallery walls themselves cannot remain untouched by what the paintings depict.
The artist’s works may resemble torn pages from Charon’s diary, in which, during his endless wait between two shores, he sketches the world that constantly comes and goes before his eyes. Bodies, flowers, shadows… Fragments of lives that take shape for a moment and then immediately begin to lose it.
The title of the current exhibition in Kralupy nad Vltavou—To the Immortals—bears the imprint of the nearby Kralupy memorial to the fallen, commemorating the victims of war. For the monument, too, is an attempt to counter the transience of the human body by preserving the memory of those whose lives have ended. Perhaps this is where true immortality lies—not in the body, which inevitably ages and fades away, but in the mark a person leaves behind. Immortal is therefore not an exhibition about death. It is an exhibition about life observed from a vantage point from which its end is already visible.
