The Czech roll is one of the most common everyday items—so commonplace, in fact, that we’ve almost stopped noticing it. For Polish artist Matěj Kania, however, it becomes an object of observation through which he explores Czech customs, everyday life, and cultural identity. The exhibition builds on the project Rohlicarium and uses this ordinary baked good to create a space for questioning what an object that passes through the hands of millions of people every day might represent.

Matěj Kania is a commercial and creative photographer and a graduate of the Liberec School of Photography. A native of Wrocław, Poland, he has called Liberec home for 15 years. Professionally, he focuses primarily on documentary and portrait photography and collaborates with cultural institutions, such as Galerie Lázně and the North Bohemian Museum. In his personal work, he explores themes of identity, emotional states, and the nature and functioning of society. He made his debut in independent photography as recently as 2025 with the series Nostalgia, which consists of photographs from the Liberec swimming pool, capturing the genius loci of this unique place. He has held several other exhibitions that reflect his interest in the environment around us. These ranged from collages of collected media to playful, even pop-art-inspired depictions of rolls.
