With Phila Primus’s exhibition “76% Silence”, the Artinbox gallery has for the third time* given space to intro-duce a young artistic talent. We first presented Phila Primus’s works in 2012 as part of the thematic group project Dreaming – A Homage to Surrealism, where she exhibited a coloured drawing in ink, very typical of her. The exhibition “76% Silence” presents four dozen works that have since originated...
Phila grew up in a cosmopolitan environment full of art and culture. At the same time, with her gene pool and her work she reflects the turbulent history of the last century both on the European and American continents. She was born to an American mother and Czech father in Düsseldorf, Germany. By the way, both her parents have German ancestry, and met in Cologne. Phila spent her childhood in Průhonice near Prague. More than by a classical education she has been attracted by the school of life. With natural creativity she plunged into the exploration of literature, philosophy, music, and art; in addition, she has travelled and discovered unknown worlds. Her work, however, more than the outer reflects the inner world. The work of the 22-year-old author is surprisingly mature, grounded in classical technique of drawing and painting. Phila’s drawings will intrigue you with their meditative spirit, Kafka-like black humor, raw honesty, and original imagination – and that is most important because, as Jan Švankmajer writes in his book The Power of Imagination: “Imagination is subversive because it puts possible against the real. (...) Imagination is the greatest gift given to human. Imagination made man human, not work.”
