Three artists, three different artistic languages, three approaches to depicting the face. Despite their visual differences, the selected works by Martin Gerboce, Ivan Pinkava, and Martin Gebert communicate brilliantly with one another.
The face is, in fact, one of the fundamental themes in the work of all three artists. The face is the most readable and, at the same time, the most complex part of the human body. In the face, we can encounter another person in their complete vulnerability, fragility, and openness, but also entirely hidden beneath a veil of deliberate pretense or a protective mask. We can read a great deal in the faces at the exhibition; here we can learn much not only about the artists themselves but also about ourselves.
The exhibition title The Self I Do Not Know refers to something that exists beneath the mask of our own face, to someone who is constantly close to us, yet whom we are still searching for. A peculiar state of abandonment, silence (which can also scream), and above all, intimacy are common to the three artists on display. Their modes of expression, however, differ.
