“It was in 1999 when I visited Zahradky with my father. We traveled to see the castle where he used to live when he was eighteen. He stayed there with anoher bunch of young folks from different countries. He studied the Czech language there before his course at Charles University started.

We had a lunch in the castle restaurant and my father started to think back. He remembered how cold it was, how he got drunk and also he mentioned the girls, how silly they were. It was not the first time I heard the story, but it was here when I started to understand how much this place meant for him. He told me stories which he never told our family before. My father was always very racional guy comparing to my mum or granny, but suddenly he was speaking about how scared he was when he saw snow at the very first time in his life. I wanted to laugh but instead I was patiently listening to him.

In spring this year when I was traveling with my mates around Europe, I had an idea to stop by and check this place once again. The castle was closed and I could see that part of the roof was missing. At least I decided to take a walk in the garden. I saw a man cutting grass. He told me, he was the caretaker of the castle since it got burnt. I told him about my father’s story and he let me to have look inside. I’ve never seen anything like that.

In couple of months I traveled there again. This time to work on the exhibition.“
