Established in 2011 through the transformation of the former University Gallery, the Ladislav Sutnar Gallery is now an integral and conceptually key part of the Ladislav Sutnar Faculty of Design and Art at the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen. Located in the city's cultural centre, the gallery has long been recognised for its focus on contemporary design, applied arts, and visual culture in a broader context. Through its programme, the gallery reflects the growing significance of the faculty at regional and international levels, actively contributing to public discourse on the role of art and design in society.

Named after the world-renowned Czech-American designer Ladislav Sutnar (1897–1976), who was born in Plzeň, the gallery engages with his legacy through its name, visual identity and sustained curatorial practice. Sutnar’s work and ideas are regularly explored through exhibition projects, which form a core pillar of the gallery's programming. The gallery is also committed to international and cross-border collaboration, presenting the work of foreign artists, designers and institutions, often in dialogue with the faculty’s pedagogical and student environment.

The Ladislav Sutnar Gallery functions as a catalyst for new ideas, connecting artistic practice, design, research and education. Its programme includes academically and research-oriented projects of international relevance, specialised symposia, and exhibitions, such as the International Photographic and Time-Based Media Symposium – Boundaries, and the Jiří Trnka International Symposium, as well as a wide range of solo and group exhibitions developed under curatorial leadership, with participation from faculty members and international guests. In this way, the gallery offers an open platform for experimentation, dialogue, and the presentation of contemporary art and design, engaging closely and actively with the public.
