Portheimka Summer Palace is a one-of-a-kind building with a unique location right in the heart of Smíchov. It was precisely on the site where Portheimka stands today that a Carthusian monastery was built in the first half of the 14th century. According to some interpretations, it was this monastery that gave Smíchov its name, as people of all walks of life and nationalities “mingled” (smíchaly) in its immediate vicinity. Portheimka itself is therefore not only the natural centerpiece of the Prague 5 district, but also the embodiment of its history—a place that encapsulates the legacy of this gem’s rich cultural and social past. Today, the Portheimka Gallery is dedicated to presenting contemporary art under the curatorial direction of The Chemistry Gallery.
