Půjde o debatu mezi Noor Bhangu a Abdullahem Qureshii, pákistánským kurátorem žijícím v Helsinkách. Noor povede diskuzi o lokalitě a tempu umělecké praxe v současné Evropě dotýkající se tématu identity. Odrazovým můstkem bude pro ni názor Adriana Pipera, který říká, že “pokud existují škatulky, je to proto, že obecenstvo má tendence tam ty škatulky vidět.” Tato přednáška se bude vyjadřovat k nedávným politickým, kulturním a osobním posunům, které vytvořili podhoubí pro novou éru takovýchto tendencí, a které zároveň zvýšilo poptávku po uměleckých dílech zabývajících se identitou. Existují způsoby jak destabilizovat širší kulturní prostředí post-brexitové Británie, a zvýšený výskyt islamofobie v Evropě obecně? Navzdory historickému a trvajícímu poutu mezi umělci z jihovýchodní Asie a evropskými, či migrujícími komunitami se ptáme, zda je v Evropě pro umělce z jihovýchodní Asie ještě místo.

Noor Bhangu je kurátorka a vědkyně, jejíž praxe se pokouší o trans-kulturní setkávání, kterým vybízí ke zkoumání koncepce diaspory a domova v post-koloniálním kontextu. Na University of Winnipeg získala titul bakaláře v Dějinách umění a magisterský titul v oboru Kulturních studií a kurátorské praxe. Její texty se objevily v akademických i veřejných publikacích, včetně Black Flash, galdem, Moveable type: The University College London English Journal, Public Parking, UncommonSense a C Magazine. V rámci její kurátorské praxe tvořila projekty jako Overlapping Violent Histories: A Curatorial Investigation into Difficult Knowledge (2018), womenof colour@soagallery (2018), a Not the Camera, But the Filing Cabinet: Performative Body Archives in Contemporary Art (2018). V roce 2018 začala studovat doktorát v oboru Komunikace a Kultura na Univerzitě Ryerson and York v Torontu. 

Abdullah Qureshii je umělec, pedagog a kulturní producent. V jeho praxi se věnuje užívání malby jako nástroje k vyjadřování osobní historie, traumatické minulosti a dětských vzpomínek. Skrze jeho dílo zkoumá tvorbu queer identity a odporu v kontextu muslimské komunity. Qureshiho dílo bylo vystavováno v mnoha státech, a držel mnohé pozice v kulturních a vzdělávacích institucích, včetně British Council a the National Colege of Arts v Lahore. V roce 2017 obdržel Qureshii post na University of the Arts v Curychu v oboru Mezinárodní spolupráce. Momentálně je doktorandem na Aalto University ve Finsku a výzkumný pracovník na Center for Arts, Design and Social Research v Bostonu.

Where is the South Asian Artist in Europe?

In conversation with Pakistani-born and Helsinki-based artist Abdullah Qureshi, curator Noor Bhangu will direct a conversational lecture about the place and pace of identity-based arts practices in contemporary Europe. Following Adrian Piper’s view, “If there are pigeonholes, it’s because the viewers who see them are already predisposed to pigeonhole us,” this lecture will consider recent political, cultural, and personal shifts that have generated a new era of predisposition and a new demand for identity-based work. Are there ways to challenge and destabilize the broader landscape of post-Brexit Britain and increased Islamaphobia across Europe? Despite the historical and ongoing entanglement of South Asian artists with European and other migratory communities, we ask if there is still place for the South Asian artist in Europe?

Noor Bhangu is a curator and scholar, whose practice employs cross-cultural encounters to interrogate issues of diaspora and indigeneity in post- and settler-colonial contexts. She completed her BA in the History of Art and her MA in Cultural Studies: Curatorial Practices from the University of Winnipeg. Her written work has appeared in academic and public journals, including Black Flash, gal-dem, Moveable Type: The University College London English Journal, Public Parking, Uncommon Sense, and C Magazine. Her curatorial practice includes projects: Overlapping Violent Histories: A Curatorial Investigation into Difficult Knowledge (2018), womenofcolour@soagallery (2018), and Not the Camera, But the Filing Cabinet: Performative Body Archives in Contemporary Art (2018).In 2018, she began her PhD in Communication and Culture at Ryerson and York University in Toronto.

Abdullah Qureshi is an artist, educator, and cultural producer. Within his practice, he is interested in using painting to address personal histories, traumatic pasts, and childhood memories. Through his research, he examines formations of queer identity and resistance in Muslim contexts. Qureshi’s work has been exhibited internationally, and he has held numerous positions at cultural and educational institutions including the British Council and the National College of Arts, Lahore. In 2017, Qureshi received the Art and International Cooperation fellowship at Zurich University of the Arts. He is currently a Doctoral Candidate at Aalto University in Finland and Research Fellow at the Center for Arts, Design, and Social Research, Boston.
