Join us on a journey through the history of the mine that helped shape the industrial character of Vítkovice for more than a century. The Louis Mine, later known as Marshal Jeremenko, has been associated with Vítkovice since 1891, and in the early 1960s, its distinctive “hammer-shaped” mining tower with an engine room at the top fundamentally transformed the local landscape. Was it really identical to the tower at the Petr Bezruč Mine in Slezská Ostrava, as is often said?
During a guided walking tour of the site, you’ll learn how the mine transformed over the decades, what made it unique, and what stories lie behind its technical structures. We’ll also explore the circumstances surrounding the mine’s renaming in 1946—the name “Marshal Jeremenko” has deeper and more remarkable connections than might appear at first glance.
At the end, we’ll launch a new puzzle from Ostrava’s Cultural Trails, this time on the theme of mining towers.
Our guides will be OKR mining historian Petr Kubinský and geologist Kateřina Polínková.
We’ll meet at the Důl Jeremenko tram stop.
